Origin and history

The cemetery cross of Saint-Laurent-sur-Oust is an emblematic monument of this commune of Brittany. This type of cross, often erected in parish enclosures, served both as a spiritual landmark and as a gathering symbol for the local community. Although its construction period is not specified, its placement in the cemetery reflects its central role in traditional funeral and religious practices.

In the Breton countryside, the cemetery crosses played a major social and religious role. They marked the sacred space for the rest of the deceased and served as a meeting point for ceremonies, processions or vigils. Their presence also attested to the importance of the Christian faith in the organization of villages, where the church and its immediate environment structured collective life.

These monuments, often sober, embodied popular piety and the memory of successive generations.
