Origin and history

The church of Saint-Laurent de Montégut, located in the Landes department in New Aquitaine, is a religious building built in the 15th century. It is distinguished by its architecture, including its flat bedside and porch topped by a polygonal bell tower. The front door, adorned with a broken arch in third-point and an archvolt, is capped with a gable framed by two pinnacles, reflecting the late Gothic style of the time.

The interior of the church reveals a brick vault in the choir, probably added in the 17th century, while the nave, originally carpented, was covered with a plaster vault at the same time. The sacristy, a small building of the 16th and 17th centuries, is joined to the south wall of the choir. These changes illustrate architectural developments and liturgical needs over the centuries.

The history of the church is marked by tumultuous events, including its looting in 1569 by the Protestant troops of Montgomery during the Wars of Religion. This episode reflects the religious tensions that agitated the region at this time. The building was listed as historic monuments by order of November 5, 2001, recognizing its heritage value and importance in local history.
