Origin and history

The Saint-Léger Church of Socx is a late Gothic Catholic religious building, built mainly in brick. It is distinguished by its three-nave hall structure and its imposing bell tower, erected at the end of the 15th century. The building suffered major damage during the religious disturbances of the second half of the 16th century, requiring a more modest reconstruction before the beginning of the 17th century. This monument thus illustrates the architectural and historical upheavals linked to the religious conflicts of the time.

In the 19th century, the church underwent major changes. Between 1894 and 1895 the naves were elongated with a span and the choir renovated under the direction of architect Omer Cockenpot. The bell tower arrow, collapsed in 1890, was rebuilt between 1897 and 1899 by Adolphe van Moe, in a style faithful to the original. This work reflects efforts to preserve the local heritage during a period of architectural renewal in France.

The twentieth century also marked the history of the church: damaged during the Second World War, it was restored and restored to service in 1960. Its bell tower, registered as a historical monument in 1944, saw its protection extended to the entire building in 2023. The interior houses remarkable furniture, including stalls, altars and an 18th-century organ, as well as a bell of 1700 decorated with a macabre dance, reflecting the artistic and historical richness of the site.

The Saint-Léger church today embodies a religious, architectural and memorial heritage. Its successive transformations, from religious wars to modern restorations, make it a symbol of resilience and adaptation. Ranked a historic monument, it continues to play a central role in Socx's community life, while attracting history and sacred art lovers.
