Origin and history

The Saint-Louis Cathedral of Blois was originally built in the 6th century with a Saint-Pierre chapel in the Merovingian period, probably built on an ancient Gallo-Roman cemetery. In the tenth century, a church dedicated to Saint Solenne was erected to house its relics, with an crypt added around 977 by Liutgarde de Vermandois. This church, dependent on the diocese of Chartres, was rebuilt several times, notably after the destruction of the Hundred Years' War and a hurricane in 1678.

The major reconstruction of the cathedral began in 1680 after the hurricane which destroyed the previous building, under the direction of architect Arnoult-Seraphin Poictevin. Funded by Louis XIV, it adopted a late Gothic style and became the seat of the diocese of Blois in 1697, erected by Pope Innocent XII. The high altar and the organ buffet, offered by the king, were installed in 1698 and 1704 respectively. The cathedral was consecrated in 1730 as Saint Louis, king of France.

In the 19th century, major restorations were undertaken, including the addition of side chapels and stained glass by Lucien-Leopold Lobin. The French Revolution temporarily transformed the cathedral into a temple of Reason, but it was restored in the early 19th century by Abbé Mathurin Gallois. In 1823, the diocese of Blois was restored, giving the building its cathedral status. In the 20th century, Jan Dibbets' modern stained glass windows, inaugurated in 2000, marked a major artistic milestone, while restoration campaigns preserved its architectural and artistic heritage.
