Former church (Cd. H 207): inscription by decree of 8 August 1997

Origin and history

The church Saint-Loup de la Villotte is a religious building located in the village of Villiers-Saint-Benoît, in the department of Yonne, Burgundy-Franche-Comté. Built between the end of the 15th century and the first half of the 16th century (1480-1530), it illustrates the religious architecture of this pivotal period between the Middle Ages and Renaissance. Its inscription as historic monuments in 1997 underscores its heritage importance, especially for its authentic elements such as the bell tower frame or the 16th century funerary slabs.

The church retains remarkable architectural details, such as the closing of the choir and the modenature of the entrance gate, characteristic of the constructions of this period. These elements, combined with its overall structure, bear witness to the local craftsmanship and stylistic influences of the Gothic-Renaissance transition. The building, owned by the commune, remains an emblematic place of Burgundy rural heritage.

Available sources, including Monumentum and Wikipedia, also mention the presence of funerary slabs dating from the early sixteenth century, reinforcing its historical interest. Although its precise location is estimated to be mediocre (level 5/10), the church remains a cultural anchor for Villiers-Saint-Benoît and its surroundings.
