Origin and history

Saint Martin's Church in Saint Martin-de-la-Lieue is a Catholic religious building dating from the 10th and 11th centuries. Located in the Calvados department, in the Normandy region, it illustrates the basic basilical plan of the first Romanesque constructions, with a gable decorated with triangular networks. This monument, modest in size, reflects the religious architecture of the time, marked by functional simplicity and sober yet symbolic decoration.

The church has been listed as a Historic Monument since September 5, 1946, recognizing its heritage value. It is located south of the village of Saint-Martin-de-la-Lieue, at number 42 of the Fervaques road. This type of building played a central role in medieval community life, serving as both a place of worship, a gathering and a territorial marker for local populations.

Historical sources mention its inscription in the Monumental Statistics of the Calvados d'Arcisse de Caumont (1867), stressing its importance in Norman architectural heritage. The monument, owned by the commune, remains a testimony of the first Romanesque churches in the region, although its precise location is sometimes subject to approximations according to the available databases.
