Origin and history

Saint Martin de Lacs Church is a Catholic religious building located in the municipality of Lacs, southeast of the Indre department in the Centre-Val de Loire region. It is part of the landscape of Boischaut Sud, a natural region marked by medieval architectural heritage. The church depends on the archdiocese of Bourges and the parish of La Châtre, reflecting its historical anchor in the local religious organization.

Dating from the 12th century, the church illustrates the Romanesque style with its unique vaulted nave in full-cindered cradle, narrow choir and semi-circular apse. The exterior facade features modillons as well as three Gallo-Roman re-use stones, representing deities assimilated to Apollo, Mercury and Venus. These elements testify to the reuse of ancient materials, a common practice in the Middle Ages.

Ranked as a historical monument by decree of 1 September 1922, the church is also distinguished by its bell tower to the south of the choir. The latter, with a quasi-square plane, is pierced with grooved arches separated by columns. The facade, decorated with a porch with a light broken arch, adds to the singularity of this building. The church remains today owned by the municipality of Lakes.

The building is part of a medieval context where parish churches played a central role in community life, serving as a place of worship, assembly and territorial marker. In the Boischaut Sud, these buildings often reflected the influence of local lords and religious institutions such as the Archdiocese of Bourges.
