Origin and history
The church Saint-Maurice de Moissanes, located in the Haute-Vienne department, is a Romanesque building built in the 4th quarter of the 12th century. It is characterized by a unique nave with flat bedside, slightly broken cradle vaulted, and a triangular bell tower-wall pierced with three arches in the middle of the hanger. Its sober architecture reflects limousine Romanesque traditions, with broken arches and a quarter-round cord supporting the vault.
In 1191, the church was given to the Priory of Saint Leonard, marking its anchor in the regional religious network. In the fourth quarter of the 15th century, a flamboyant chapel was added to the southeast, illustrating the evolution of architectural styles. This chapel, vaulted dogives, opens with a door adorned with an arch in braid, with pinnacles, and a three-ringed crown, typical of late Gothic art. The contrast between Romanesque simplicity and flamboyant ornamentation testifies to medieval transformations.
Ranked Historic Monument by order of 15 October 1985, the church also includes a cross of court in its protection. Owned by the municipality of Moissanes, it embodies the religious and artistic heritage of the Haute-Vienne, between Romanesque heritage and Gothic influences. Its state of conservation and its location (9 Rue de la Gane) make it an accessible witness, although poorly located according to the databases (accuracy: 5/10).
