Origin and history
The church of Saint-Omer de Bambecque came into being in the 12th century, with a first mention of the parish in 1134. This place of worship, originally Romanesque, bears witness to an ancient religious occupation in this region of Flanders. The ravages suffered in 1568 — probably linked to the disturbances of the religious wars — mark a turning point in its history, requiring major reconstruction.
Between 1591 and 1606, the building was rebuilt in the form of a three-vessel hall church with a characteristic peg tower. This reconstruction is part of the post-Renaissance architectural context, combining late Gothic influences and early classical tendencies. In the 18th century, a sacristy was added in 1747, then enlarged in 1896, reflecting the evolution of liturgical needs.
The 19th and 20th centuries were marked by significant restoration campaigns. In 1817 and 1821-1822, repairs were undertaken to preserve the structure. Between 1874 and 1910, the tile was redone, while in 1876-1878 the wooden beams of the vault gave way to iron pulls, modernizing the building. The stained glass windows, the work of painter-glass painter J. Boulanger, were installed in 1878. Finally, the arrow was restored in 1982, consolidating this heritage classified Historic Monument since 2006.
The Saint-Omer church thus illustrates nearly nine centuries of history, between destruction, reconstruction and adaptations to the cultural and community needs. Its hybrid architecture — medieval, Renaissance and modern — makes it a privileged witness to stylistic and technical developments in French Flanders.
