Origin and history
Saint-Pierre de Valay Church is a Catholic church in the commune of Valay, Haute-Saône, Burgundy-Franche-Comté region. Built between 1840 and 1844, it replaces an old chapel, called Mareschal chapel, whose history remains unknown. The current building was erected according to the plans of the architect Feneon d'Amotte, together with the entrepreneur Champennois as master contractor.
The church was listed as historic monuments on 21 March 1983, recognizing its heritage value. Today it belongs to the commune of Valay and is distinguished by its 19th century Christian architecture, typical of the religious reconstructions of this period in Franche-Comté. Its location at 1 Rue de la Grotte marks the historic centre of the village.
The building of this church is part of an architectural and religious renewal in the 19th century, where many buildings were modernized or rebuilt to meet the needs of local communities. Valay, like other villages in the region, has seen its religious heritage change, mixing medieval heritage and contemporary influences.
