Michel-Gabriel Rossillon de Bernex - Bishop of Geneva Consacra the church in 1727.

Origin and history

The St. Peter's church was built in 1724 by Italian masons from Lake Como, financed by the inhabitants to avoid winter trips to Chamonix. It was consecrated in 1727 by the bishop of Geneva, Michel-Gabriel Rossillon of Bernx. Its baroque style and bulb bell tower, covered in white iron scales since 1987, make it a remarkable example of Alpine religious art.

In the 19th century, around 1860, the church was enlarged with a span and its façade was re-enacted. Its movable heritage includes an Italian bas-relief of the seventeenth century, classified in 1912, representing the Adoration of the Magi, as well as a silver ostensoir classified in 1963. A complete restoration between 1965 and 1967 preserved its original baroque character.

In 2016, a new organ was installed thanks to the town hall and the Heritage Foundation, blessed in 2017 by the bishop of Annecy. This monument, linked to the community and religious life of the valley, illustrates the adaptation of mountain populations to climatic and geographical constraints.
