Origin and history
Saint Quentin de Tassilly Church is a Catholic church located in the commune of Bons-Tassilly, Calvados, Normandy. Dating mainly from the twelfth and seventeenth centuries, it presents a mixture of medieval and classical architectural elements. The bell tower and the choir, attributed to the thirteenth century by Arcisse de Caumont, underwent subsequent repairs that altered their original architectural character. The choir, in particular, is described as having lost its aesthetic interest because of these changes.
The building was historically linked to the abbey of the Ladies of Caen, which had the right of appointment to the cure. The church also depended on the dean of Aubigny. The nave dates back to the 12th century, while the west gate dates back to the 17th century. The bays of the south elevation and the bell tower were added in the 18th century. The church was listed as historic monuments on 19 September 1928, recognizing its heritage value.
According to available sources, including the works of Arcisse de Caumont in his monumental Statistique du Calvados (1850), the church was an important place of worship in the region. Its architectural heritage reflects the stylistic and religious evolutions of Normandy throughout the centuries, from the Middle Ages to the modern era. The property of the building today belongs to the municipality of Bons-Tassilly.
