Origin and history

The Saint-Roman Church of Etreham is a Catholic religious building located in the commune of Etreham, Calvados, Normandy. Built between the 11th and 12th centuries, it represents a typical example of the Romanesque architecture of this period, marked by simple forms and a robust character characteristic of the rural churches of the time.

Ranked as a historical monument in 1840, Saint-Romain Church was one of the first protected buildings in France. This early classification reflects its heritage importance and the desire to preserve a still well preserved medieval religious heritage. The architectural and historical details of the building are documented in works such as the Monumental Statistics of the Calvados d'Arcisse de Caumont, published in 1857.

Like many rural churches in Normandy, Saint-Roman d'Étréham played a central role in medieval community life. It served not only as a place of worship, but also as a gathering point for the inhabitants, reflecting the social and religious organization of the time. The churches of this period were often at the heart of local activities, whether spiritual, administrative or even economic.

The location of the church in the Calvados department is part of a region rich in medieval heritage, especially because of its history linked to the Norman conquest and its subsequent development under the influence of the Dukes of Normandy. The classification of 1840 places this building among the emblematic monuments of Lower Normandy, now integrated into the Normandy region.
