Alcime-Armand-Pierre-Henri Gouraud - Bishop of Vannes Blessed the church in 1914.

Origin and history

The church of St.Saturnin is the parish building of Belz, in Morbihan. It was erected in 1914 to replace an ancient Romanesque church, the last of which was restored in 1678. This building, which had already been considered delabrated in 1832 despite post-revolutionary repairs, was finally destroyed in 1913 because of its state of advanced degradation.

The present Gothic-style church was quickly built: the works began in May 1914, and was blessed on December 6 of the same year by the Bishop of Vannes, Alcime-Armand-Pierre-Henri Gouraud. In the absence of financial resources, the bell tower could not be built.

The ancient Romanesque church, mentioned in the seventeenth century, illustrates local religious history. Its destruction in 1913 marked the end of a building that had survived centuries of history, despite ad hoc repairs. The new church, although more recent, perpetuates the central role of this place of worship in the community of Belz.
