Origin and history
Saint-Seurin de Rions Church, located in the Gironde department in Nouvelle-Aquitaine, is a Catholic building dating back to the 12th century. Originally built in Romanesque style, it consisted of a unique nave, a transept, a central apse and two apsidioles. Its bedside was vaulted towards the end of the 12th century, while the vaults of the transept were added in the 13th century, when the neighbouring archdiocese was built. This monument thus illustrates medieval architectural evolution, mixing Romanesque heritage and Gothic transformations.
In the 14th century, in the context of the fortification of the town of Rions, the Romanesque nave was entirely rebuilt and the church enlarged by the addition of two lower side, giving the building its present structure to three ships of similar heights, vaulted with dogives. The transept and the three apses, of which the centre is preceded by a vaulted choir in a cradle, also date from this period. The sculpted capitals, adorned with leaves, interlaces and historiated scenes such as the Sacrifice of Abraham or Daniel in the lions' pit, bear witness to preserved Romanesque art, especially in the oldest parts.
The modifications continued in the 18th and 19th centuries: a bell tower with two bays in the middle of the hangar was erected in the 14th century above the triumphal arch, then replaced by a square bell tower of neoclassical style in the 19th century, while two northern appendices (chapelle and fonts baptismaux) were added. Ranked a historic monument by decree of 1 December 1908, the church also retains traces of a drowned cemetery destroyed in the 18th century, recalling its anchor in local history. Its southern porch and its current bell tower, dating from the mid-18th century, complete a building marked by nearly nine centuries of history.
The church of Saint-Seurin is distinguished by its three apse Romanesque bedside, including the main vaulted cul-de-four, and its historic capitals, rare remains of the original construction. The site, owned by the municipality, is open to visit and is part of a major religious and architectural heritage of the Ciron Valley. Its ranking among historical monuments underlines its artistic and historical importance for the region.
