Origin and history

The Saint-Symphorian church of Saint-Symphorien-d'Ozon was first mentioned in 1153 as property of the Abbey of Ainay. Its construction spans several centuries, with distinct elements: the choir dating from the late Middle Ages, the nave erected in the 18th century, and the west facade added to the 19th century. These successive phases reflect the architectural evolutions and liturgical needs of each era.

Among the notable architectural details are the arches of the sacristy and carved caps, testimonies of the craft of the period. The building, inscribed in the Historical Monuments by order of 30 August 2001, also illustrates the intervention of local artisans such as architect Antonin Louvier and painter Jean-Louis Loubet, who marked his recent history.

Located in the heart of the village, at the intersection of Church Street and Market Square, the church occupies a central place in the communal heritage. Its official inscription underlines its historical and artistic importance, while anchoring its role in the social and religious life of Saint-Symphorien-d'Ozon for nearly nine centuries.
