Origin and history

Saint-Vincent-de-Paul de Sotteville-lès-Rouen Church was built in 1929 by architect Raoul Lagnel to respond to the population increase in the commune after the First World War. It replaces a temporary wooden church, which has become insufficient. The building, made of concrete and brick, adopts a rectangular nave without visible sides, with a bedside with cut strips. Its bell tower, originally planned in bulb, was finally made with a roof in peak in 1935.

The church suffered damage during the 1944 bombings, requiring repairs between 1952 and 1957. Raoul Lagnel took advantage of it to enlarge the sacristy. Despite its modern material, concrete, the building retains a classic composition, with an interior decoration of mosaics. It was listed as a historical monument on 22 April 2004 for its architectural and heritage interest.

Located at 385 Victor-Hugo Street, the church illustrates the adaptation of traditional religious forms to the urban and technical constraints of the twentieth century. Its absence of transept, due to the peculiarities of the terrain, and its hybrid style (modern by materials, classical by volumes) make it a unique testimony of the ecclesiastical architecture of the inter-war period in Normandy.
