Origin and history

The Museum of the Archaeological Society of Touraine, located in Tours, houses various collections covering periods from prehistoric to medieval times. These collections, once exhibited at the Hôtel Gouin, were entrusted to the Conseil départemental d'Indre-et-Loire by an agreement signed on 6 December 2007. Although remaining the property of the Société archéologique de Touraine, their conservation and presentation to the public are now ensured by the department.

The topics covered include national archaeology (Prehistory, Gallo-Roman, Medieval), decorative arts such as glassware and stained glass windows, as well as fine arts with sculptures. The museum also highlights local and regional history, reflecting the cultural and historical heritage of the Touraine. These collections are labeled "Musée de France" and accessible to the public at 25 rue du Commerce in Tours.

The origin of these collections goes back to the activities of the Touraine Archaeological Society, founded to preserve and study the regional heritage. Their shared management between the learned society and the department illustrates an institutional collaboration aimed at valuing this heritage while ensuring its sustainability. The museum, although modest in terms of precise localization, plays a key role in the dissemination of knowledge about tourangelle history.
