Origin and history

The collegiate Saint-Barthélemy of Pimbo, located in the Landes in New Aquitaine, was mentioned in the 11th century, although a local legend attributed the foundation to Charlemagne. The present building, built in the 12th century, has a three apse Romanesque bedside and a fortified nave, reflecting its defensive role. The church depended on the collegiate Saint-Sernin of Toulouse and in the 16th century housed a chapter of seven canons, with daily services and sung Masses.

In 1569, during the wars of religion, the collegiate church was burned by the Reformers: the abbatial house, the canonical houses and part of the furniture (calices, reliquaries) were destroyed. Five canons are ransomed and three priests killed. The whole is partially restored in the following centuries, including the presbytery in the 19th century. The gate and bedside are classified as historical monuments in 1935 and 1950, before a total inscription of the church, the rectory and its Romanesque hall in 1998.

The architecture of the college combines Romanesque elements (sculpted modillons of the bedside, western gate) and medieval defensive developments, such as a round road served by a spiral staircase. The nave, vaulted in the middle of the hangar, and the external foothills testify to its dual religious and military vocation. The interior decoration, partially lost, preserves capitals with plant or animal motifs, while the present furniture (XVIIth–XVIIIth centuries) includes a crucifix, a baroque high altar and classified statues.

Integrated with Via Podiensis, the route of the pilgrimage of Santiago de Compostela, the collegiate illustrates the Romanesque heritage of Gascon. Its history also reflects the religious tensions of the 16th-17th centuries, marked by Protestant destruction and Catholic reconstruction. Today, it remains a place of worship and an architectural witness of the medieval Landes.
