Origin and history
The Gallo-Roman shrine of Margerides, located in the department of Corrèze in New Aquitaine, is an archaeological vestige dated from the Gallo-Roman period. This site, known as the Grand Rooms, includes three temples and traces of domestic or industrial occupation. It illustrates the importance of local religious and artisanal practices between the third and fourth centuries, as evidenced by the on-site excavations.
Archaeological excavations revealed significant elements, such as coins (including one from Postume, 260-269), fragments of white earth statuettes, iron tools, and millstones. These discoveries suggest a prolonged occupation of the site, with traces of reconstruction and varied activities, ranging from religious worship to artisanal uses. Close by, other Gallo-Roman remains, such as villas and Roman roads (including the Bort-Limoges road), confirm the integration of Margerides into a structured regional network.
The sanctuary has been listed as a Historic Monument since December 19, 1984, highlighting its heritage value. Its location, near Roman roads and other substructures, strengthens its central role in the territorial and social organization of the time. The objects discovered, such as fibules, sigillated ceramics, and coins from Constantine or Magnence, offer valuable insight into everyday life and cultural exchanges in Roman Gaul.
The town of Margerides, crossed by old roads and endowed with natural resources (forests, rivers like the Diège), presents a landscape marked by its Gallo-Roman heritage. This archaeological heritage is part of a wider geographical context, characterized by mountain reliefs and a dispersed human occupation, typical of the Massif Central.
Today, the site of Les Coins-Grandes remains a tangible testimony of this time, although its access and precise location (204 Chemin Chez Piolet) are roughly documented. Its classification and the studies carried out make it a place of interest for understanding the Romanization in Aquitaine and the local dynamics between antiquity and the Middle Ages.
