Origin and history

The cross known as Saint-Constant is a monument located in the municipality of Montmachoux, Seine-et-Marne, in the Île-de-France region. This monument, whose exact period of construction is not specified, was included in the inventory of Historical Monuments by order of 1 April 1947. Today it belongs to the municipality and is an element of the local heritage.

The monumental crosses, like that of Saint Constant, were often erected for religious or commemorative purposes in French villages. They served as a visual and spiritual landmark for the inhabitants, sometimes marking gathering places or crossroads. In Île-de-France, these monuments reflect the importance of the Christian faith in the organization of rural communities, especially before the twentieth century.
