Origin and history

The Saint-Eutrope church of Allemans-du-Dropt, located in the Lot-et-Garonne department of New Aquitaine, is a religious building dating back to the 11th century. His primitive apse, the only preserved part of this time, bears witness to his seniority. Major alterations occurred in the 15th and 18th centuries, with an elevation of the building and interior modifications. These transformations reflect the architectural and liturgical evolutions of each period, while preserving the original structure.

In the 19th century, the church underwent new changes, including the construction of a sacristy in 1877 and the addition of a neo-classical bell tower in 1845. These additions illustrate the building's adaptations to contemporary needs, while integrating stylistic elements specific to the time. The church is also remarkable for its wet-painted decoration, made in the 15th century and depicting scenes from the Last Judgment and Hell. These frescoes, covered in badigeon in the 17th century, were not rediscovered until the 20th century, then restored several times (1964, 1972, 1982).

The building was listed as a historic monument in 1994, and was classified in 1996 for its murals, highlighting their outstanding heritage value. These legal protections ensure the conservation of this heritage, while allowing its study and exploitation. The frescoes, in particular, offer a rare testimony of medieval art in Aquitaine, attracting the attention of historians and visitors. The church, owned by the municipality, remains a place of worship and a major tourist site, open to the visit.

The sources available, notably the works of Jean-Raoul Marboutin and Cécile Stalder-Roux, highlight the iconographic and stylistic importance of the paintings. These studies, published in the Revue de l'Agenais, analyse the themes represented, such as the Last Judgment, and their place in regional religious art. References to these publications, as well as to databases such as Mérimée, enrich the understanding of this monument, while facilitating its access to the public.

The location of the church, on the Place de la Liberté in Allemans-du-Dropt, makes it a central point of the village. Its exact address, referenced in the Merimée database, allows visitors to easily locate it, while tools like Google Street View offer a first visual approach. The accuracy of its location, assessed as satisfactory, and the photo credits available under Creative Commons license, contribute to its online promotion.

Finally, Saint-Eutope Church is part of a broader heritage network, including other historical monuments of Lot-et-Garonne. Its inclusion in tourist guides, such as the Festival, and its presence on platforms dedicated to religious heritage, reinforce its attractiveness. These initiatives, coupled with virtual or thematic visits (such as those proposed by Visits in Aquitaine), ensure a sustainable presentation of this architectural and artistic gem.
