Origin and history
The sanctuary of Gallo-Roman waters of the Déversoir, located in Montbouy in the Loiret, is a listed historical monument dedicated to healing cults. Organized around a large quadrilateral in small apparatus, it is bordered by a peripheral gallery divided into two rectangles by a median gallery. Three square towers reinforce its exterior wall, while a square room adorned with pilasters and mosaic in white and black tesseles marks the east entrance. This place illustrates Gallo-Roman sacred architecture, combining hydraulic functionality and religious symbolism.
To the south of the sanctuary, an octagonal construction interrupted the peripheral gallery. Its walls, reinforced by foothills and decorated with 24 semicircular columns (brick and stone), house a central oval basin accessible by two steps. A spring flows directly into this sacred pool, protected by a rectangular basin. Two pipes are used to drain the water, one of which crosses the octagon to reach a square basin. This complex hydraulic system emphasizes the ritual importance of water in Gallo-Roman therapeutic practices.
Excavations revealed ex-oak wood votos, carved to represent parts of the human body, testifying to the offerings of pilgrims seeking healing. These objects, deposited in the circular basin, confirm the medical and spiritual vocation of the site. Partially classified in 1992 and 1993, the sanctuary preserves remains buried and in elevation, protected for their archaeological and historical value. Its state of conservation and its approximate location (precision: 6/10) make it a major study site to understand the water cults in Roman Gaul.
