Origin and history

The Sartre Oratory is a religious monument located in Cheylade, in the department of Cantal (region Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes). Built in the early 18th century, it is part of the remains of an old castle transformed into a farm. Its architecture, of square plan, is surmounted by a truncated pyramid, and its interior preserves woodwork painted in Damiers, decorated with various motifs: bestiary, mythological figures, and natural elements such as flowers or trees. A dove representing the Holy Spirit, the only religious symbol among more than two hundred decorative details, dominates the vault.

This castral oratory, pierced by a barred window and equipped with a slab of round stone (probably an ancient statue base), bears witness to an origin related to local seigneurial history. The window is surmounted by a triangular lintel, and the traces of colors on vertical woodwork suggest a more extensive painted decoration originally. The four triangles of the pyramidal vault are covered with woodwork divided into fifty squares each, organized in eight thematic rows. Among the subjects represented are realistic or fantastic animals (ephant, griffon, centaure), plant elements, and two non-natural exceptions: a caravelle and a castle.

Ranked as historical monuments by order of 30 January 1986, the Sartre Oratory is distinguished by its dominant secular decor, where only the dove and some motifs recall its original religious vocation. The paintings, combining realism and imagination, reflect both the local terroir (animals and plants of the region) and exotic or mythological influences, offering a rare glimpse of rural decorative art in the 18th century in Haute-Auvergne. Its exact address, 5223 Le Sartre à Cheylade, is referenced in the Mérimée database under the code Insee 15049.
