Origin and history

The Battlefield of the Tête-des-Faux, also known as Buchenkopf in German, is an emblematic site of the First World War located on horseback in the communes of Lapotroie and Bonhomme, in the Upper Rhine. This place is marked by intense fighting, including the German attack led by the 14th Battalion of foot fighters on Christmas night 1914, aimed at regaining control of the summit. Until the end of the conflict, the area was massively fortified, leaving traces still visible today, such as shelters and military structures.

The site was classified as historical monuments by order of 12 March 1932, protecting a total area of 1 hectare 18 acres, including the top of the Tête-des-Faux, the Roche du Corbeau and an old funicular station. These remains demonstrate the strategic importance of the site during the Great War, as well as the extreme conditions to which the soldiers were subjected. The location near the Devin pond adds a landscape dimension to this historic place.

Protected elements include fortified structures, shelters and military infrastructure, providing a concrete overview of the defence techniques used at the time. Although the site is now a place of memory, its access and visit may vary depending on local conditions. Available sources, such as Wikipedia and Monumentum, confirm its status as a historical monument and its role in Alsatian military history.
