Origin and history

The school of Retaud, built in the 18th century, is distinguished by its classical architecture and monumental portal. The latter, in basket handle, is flanked by two side doors and surmounted by a shield with arms of the Million family. Four pilasters support carved urns, adding a decorative and symbolic dimension to the building. The whole reflects the importance attached to education and local prestige at that time.

The building was listed as historic monuments by order of 12 January 1931, a recognition of its heritage value. Only the gate of the court is officially protected, stressing its exceptional character. The property belongs today to the commune of Rétaud, in the Charente-Maritime department, in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region. Its exact address, 6 Rue Saint-Trojan, allows to locate it in the center of the village.

In the 18th century, schools in rural areas played a central role in the transmission of knowledge and the affirmation of local elites. School buildings, often funded by influential families like the Millions, also served as a symbol of modernity and power. In Retaud, as in other communes of the time, these institutions reflected the social and cultural dynamics of a changing society, marked by the emergence of public education and the influence of the aristocracy or the Earth bourgeoisie.
