Origin and history
The Bergeret de Frouville hotel, located at 3 rue Béranger in the 3rd arrondissement of Paris, was built in 1720 by Peyrenc de Moras. Originally, it formed a large architectural complex with the nearby Hague hotel, acquired by the City of Paris at the end of the 19th century. Their initial symmetry, partially preserved, contrasts with today's very altered interior decorations, of which only a few remains such as ceiling roses or cornices. The hotel once extended to Charlot Street, but the streetside buildings disappeared in 1882 when new buildings were built.
Access to the hotel is via a monumental gate listed in the Supplementary Inventory of Historic Monuments in 1925, opening onto a courtyard surrounded by wings and a main house body. The buildings, raised on vaulted cellars (comparable to those of the Hague Hotel), include a ground floor, a square floor and a mansard floor. At the site of the present rue de la Franche-Comté was once a low court, whose gable wall still retains traces of the original boreholes. Inside, a wrought iron ramp staircase, also inscribed in 1925, and vaulted cellars testify to the hotel's splendour.
In 1987, several elements were protected by arrest: the gate with its vantals, facades and roofs, the courtyard floor, vaulted cellars, and the stairwell. Although transformed into a communal school, the Bergeret Hotel in Frouville remains a remarkable example of the Parisian hotel architecture of the early eighteenth century, despite the changes experienced over the centuries.
