Origin and history

The villa Arson derives its name from Pierre-Joseph Arson, an Avignon merchant who acquired in 1812 an 18th-century Italian residence built by Consul Peyre de la Coste. The Arson family then transformed the six-hectare agricultural estate into an Italian garden, decorated with terraces, baroque statues and fountains. The southern slope is made up of terraces with endemic plants (pins, olive trees) and exotic plants (palmiers, cactus), while a cypress alley is planted to the west. When Pierre-Joseph died in 1851, his son Gonzague inherited the property, which later became a large hotel and then a clinic after the First World War.

In 1964, the city of Nice transferred the estate to the state to create an international art school, a project led by André Malraux. The architect Michel Marot integrates the historic villa into a modernist concrete complex, respecting topography on terraces and using pebbles of the Var for facades. Inaugurated in 1972, the school merged with the contemporary art centre in 1984, becoming a major centre for training, artistic residence and dissemination. The site, registered with historical monuments in 1943 and then in 2024, combines 18th century heritage and brutalist architecture, with rooftop gardens and patios preserving the spirit of the old gardens.

The Centre d'art contemporain (CAC), created in 1984, supports emerging artists through exhibitions and residences, without constituting a permanent collection. The National School of Art (ENSA) offers a five-year course focusing on contemporary art, with digital poles, publishing, volume and theory. The media library, with 35,000 references, maintains a 19th-century heritage fund from the former school of decorative arts. The contemporary garden Le Bosco symbolizes the international vocation of the place with trees from different continents.

The site also houses works in situ such as Pyramid for Villa Arson by Dan Graham (1989) or Nice by Maurizio Nannucci (1990), deposited by artists or FNAC. In 2020, the Arson villa became a component of the Côte d'Azur University, while remaining under the supervision of the Ministry of Culture. Its architecture, labeled "Twentieth Century Heritage" in 2000, is marked by raw materials, natural light games and Mediterranean landscape integration.

Despite its influence, the school was criticized in 2019 for a "dangerous climate" and controversial teaching practices, revealed by a ministerial investigation. Today, the Arson villa remains a hybrid place, combining formation, creation and heritage, with exhibitions such as La Villa Arson - Nice, a work of architecture(s) in 2009 or its representation at the Pompidou-Metz centre in 2010.
