Origin and history
The Maison Seguin is a private building located in the heart of the old town of La Réole, at 7 rue Maurice-Moussillac. Its construction dates back to the 12th and 13th centuries, as evidenced by architectural elements discovered in 1993. These remains, studied in 1861 by Léo Drouyn, were considered one of the most beautiful examples of medieval civil architecture in southern France, although the building was believed to have been destroyed in the 19th century.
The outside of the house, with the exception of a small bay on the first floor, today reveals no apparent historical element. However, its heritage importance led to its full listing as historic monuments by order of 7 November 2002. The engravings of Léo Drouyn (1861) and subsequent studies, such as those of Jacques Gardelles (1974) or Eric Gassies (1997), underline his value in understanding Bordeaux civil architecture of this period.
Archaeological research has made it possible to date precisely the house of the late 12th or early 13th century. Although partially masked by later changes, its original structure offers a rare testimony of medieval urban dwellings in Aquitaine. Publications in the Monumental Bulletin and Christian Bougoux (2003)'s work on the Relais heritage complement the sources available on this emblematic monument.
