Origin and history

The Seven Crosses of Plelan-le-Petit are a collection of historical monuments located in the municipality of the same name, in the department of Côtes-d-Armor, in Brittany. These granite crosses, arranged in hemicycle on a wall, date from the 4th quarter of the 18th century. According to local tradition, they represent the seven founding saints of Brittany, linked to the Tro Breiz pilgrimage. Their present location is the result of a move orchestrated in 1868 by Abbé Morin, then rector of the parish, with the support of Augustin David, bishop of Saint-Brieuc.

The history of the crosses is marked by a tragic legend: the parish registers evoke a cahutte occupied by seven people, murdered one Christmas night on this ground. The monuments, blessed in 1872 by the bishop, were listed as historical monuments on December 21, 1925. Their arrangement and symbolism reflect both religious devotion and a local heritage rooted in Breton narratives.

Architecturally, the crosses and their granite bases illustrate Breton funeral and memorial art. Their inscription among historical monuments underlines their heritage value, both for their seniority and for their connection to the Christian traditions of the region. Their location on the Jugon-les-Lacs road also makes it a point of interest for pilgrims and visitors exploring the heritage of the Côtes-d'Armor.
