Jean Prouvé - Engineer and designer Author of modular aluminium architecture.

Origin and history

The Beure gas station, built in 1972 by engineer Jean Prouvé, illustrates its innovative approach to modular and demountable architectures. The building is distinguished by an awning supported by two poles and a rotunda housing a shop on the ground floor as well as a dwelling on the first floor. The materials used, such as aluminium and heat-integrated polyester panels, reflect Prouvé's technical research, combined with largely glazed walls for optimum brightness.

Classified Historical Monument by decree of 21 November 2012 for its rotunda (cadastre AC 265), this station embodies the adaptation of industrial principles to civil architecture. Owned by a private company, it also reflects the development of road infrastructure in the last third of the 20th century, a period marked by the rise of automobiles and the standardization of service equipment.

Located on the 22nd road from Lyon to Beure (Doubs), its location reflects the growing needs for refuelling points along major axes, such as the road linking Besançon to Lyon. The accuracy of its location is assessed as "a priori satisfactory" (note 6/10), and its current state remains documented by sources such as Monumentum and Merimée data.
