Origin and history
A remarkable archaeological site is a set of six blocks of engraved rocks, located in the Bananier River at Capesterre-Belle-Eau. These engravings, whose precise dating is not mentioned in the available sources, were protected by an inscription under the Historic Monuments on October 1, 2014. The protected perimeter includes the blocks themselves as well as their attitude area, as defined on a plan annexed to the registration order.
This type of vestige usually reflects the cultural or ritual practices of pre-Columbian or colonial populations in Guadeloupe. Although the details of their origin or significance remain absent from the sources, their location in the Bananier River suggests a link to the island's natural resources and channels of communication. The protection of this site reflects its heritage importance for the understanding of local history, in a department where the physical traces of ancient times are often fragile.
