Origin and history

The Devinière, located in Seuilly en Touraine, is a 15th-century country house composed of a rectangular house, a 17th-century dovecote and troglodytic cellars dug in the white tuft. This type of construction, typical of the region, belonged to the Rabelais family, although no document formally confirms the birth of François Rabelais on the spot. His father, Antoine Rabelais, a landowner, also owned a house in Chinon, nearby.

Ranked a historic monument in 1930 for the house and in 1951 for the dovecote, the Devinière was acquired in 1948 by the department of Indre-et-Loire, under the impulse of the prefect Robert Vivier. Transformed into a museum in 1951, she presents collections dedicated to Rabelais's work, including engravings, ancient works and objects related to her life. The site also includes a vegetable garden and vineyards replanted in 2004, perpetuating the local wine tradition.

Rabelais evokes her childhood home in Gargantua, where she inspires the Grandgousier Castle, the theatre of the Picrocholine War, an allegory of the conflicts between François I and Charles Quint. The museum, managed by the departmental council and the Association des Amis de Rabelais, showcases this literary and architectural heritage, while offering visits to the cellars and dovecote, a rare example of medieval dovecote.

Accessible from Chinon via a long distance transport network (on reservation from April to September), the Devinière is labeled "Maison des Illustres" and "Museum de France". The estate, once divided and degraded, was restored to become a place of memory dedicated to one of the greatest Renaissance humanists.
