Shell bridge crossing the Aigue-Brun (no CADASTRE box): inscription by order of 6 June 1988
Origin and history
The shell bridge on the Aigue-Brun is located in the Combe de Lourmarin, in Vaucluse, in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region. It spans the Aigue Brun River, the only river in the Luberon Mountains to never dry out. This bridge, built in 1606, replaces an older structure, although the details about it remain unknown. Its architecture evokes the symbolism of the paths of Santiago de Compostela, although no formal evidence confirms this link.
The bridge was listed as historic monuments by order of 6 June 1988. Today it belongs to the department of Vaucluse. A second shell bridge, similar in design, exists in the neighbouring municipality of Bonnieux, highlighting a local architectural tradition. The Aigue Brun River, which it crosses, plays a major hydrological role in the region, feeding the Luberon ecosystems sustainably.
The work is part of a landscape marked by the history of medieval and modern channels of communication. Although its first vocation was utilitarian (freezing of the river), its shell shape gives it a symbolic dimension, often associated with pilgrimages. However, no source mentions its actual use by the pilgrims of Compostela. Protection in 1988 reflects its historic and technical heritage value.
