Shell bridge crossing the Aigue-Brun (no CADASTRE box): inscription by order of 6 June 1988
Origin and history
The shell bridge over the Aigue-Brun is located in the Combe de Lourmarin, in Vaucluse, crossing the Aigue Brun River. A second similar bridge exists in the municipality of Bonnieux, where the one inscribed with historical monuments is located. This type of bridge, with its characteristic shape, evokes the symbols related to pilgrimages, although there is no evidence to confirm a direct link with Santiago de Compostela.
Built in 1606, this bridge replaces an older work, whose history remains poorly known. It shows the construction techniques of the modern era and the importance of communication routes in the Luberon massif. The Aigue Brun River, which spans the river, is remarkable for its permanent flow, a rarity in this limestone region.
The bridge was listed as historic monuments by order of 6 June 1988, thereby recognizing its heritage value. Today owned by the municipality of Bonnieux, it illustrates the local architectural heritage and its integration into a preserved natural landscape. No information is available on its current accessibility or contemporary uses.
