Origin and history

The school of Signalauze, located in Ruynes-en-Margeride in the Cantal, was built in the second half of the 19th century. In 1870, it was founded as a private school, before being bought by the commune in 1892. Between 1894 and 1904, the building was rebuilt and renovated to become a rural school typical of the Third Republic. Today, it is part of the Margeride Academy, which values local heritage.

The school, dedicated to Clémence Fontille, an estimated teacher at the beginning of the 20th century, retains its furniture and objects from the 1930s. The site, including the classroom, latrines, the vegetable garden and the courtyard, has been listed as historic monuments since September 15, 1993. It illustrates the school and peasant life of the Margeride, a mountainous region of the Central Massif.

The Margeride Award, born in 1984 of a citizens' initiative in Loubaresse, brings together three sites dedicated to local history. The school of Signalauze is a key element, complemented by the "House of the Peasant" and a garden highlighting traditional flora and know-how. The museum received the "Dose the Museum" award from the Ministry of Culture.
