Origin and history

The 18th century residence, located at 30 rue Marc-Arcis and 77 avenue Frédéric-Estèbe in Toulouse, is distinguished by its finely molded brick gate, framed by wingers and completed by two pedestrian doors. Behind this gate rises a rectangular house, built of brick and recently coated, typical of the country houses of the era. Its ground floor, pierced by rectangular windows, and its floor illuminated by oculi on the back façade reflect a sober but elegant architectural style. The street façade, symmetrical, is marked by a central forebody adorned with bossed backs and surmounted by a rectangular pediment, with an entrance door in the middle.

The decorative elements of this house are remarkable: three carved faces, including that of the goddess Diane identifiable thanks to the lunar crescent on her cap, adorn the upper part of the facade. At the rear, the central door is also decorated with a mascaron. The oculi, similar to those of the Puyvert hotel (built between 1755 and 1765), as well as carved stones and lintels, bear witness to an architectural quality which justified its inscription in the Historical Monuments in 1996. Although the house has undergone changes (window modifications, roofing, and lowering of lintels), its original elements, such as portals and sculptures, remain valuable evidence of its past.

Originally attached to the domain of Caussade, this residence appears on the plans of Toulouse of the eighteenth century. Its exact history and precise dating remain difficult to establish due to successive transformations. Despite these alterations, the quality of the preserved elements, such as the moulded brick gates and the sculptures on the façade, has attracted the attention of the heritage authorities. The 1996 inscription specifically concerns facades, roofs and the entrance gate, highlighting their historical and artistic value.

The location of the residence, between Rue Marc-Arcis and Avenue Frédéric-Estèbe, as well as its initial membership in the estate of Caussade, make it a representative example of the 18th century Toulouse architecture. Stylistic comparisons with other buildings of the period, such as the Puyvert Hotel, allow to situate this house in the wider context of the built heritage of the Occitan region. Its present state, though modified, offers an overview of the noble country residences of that time.
