Gate to street (including sideways): inscription by order of 26 March 1934
Origin and history
La Maison Silvestre, located in Saint-Saturnin-lès-Apt in the department of Vaucluse, is a 17th-century monument. It has been listed in the Historic Monuments since 1934, especially for its street door, including the vantals. This type of civil architecture reflects the construction styles and techniques of the modern era in Provence, where bourgeois or notable houses were distinguished by remarkable decorative or functional elements, such as this door.
In the 17th century, Saint-Saturnin-lès-Apt, like many villages in Provence, was marked by a rural and artisanal economy. The houses of this period were often used as a place of life, trade or craft for local families. Protected architectural elements, such as doors or facades, demonstrate the importance attached to the aesthetics and durability of buildings, while illustrating the social status of their owners.
The location of Silvestre House, mentioned both Rue de la République and Place de la Mairie, suggests a central position in the village. This centrality could indicate a significant social or economic role for its occupants. The inscription in the title of Historic Monuments in 1934 underscores the heritage value of this architectural element, preserved despite centuries.
