Origin and history

The church Saint-Jean-Baptiste de Becquigny is located in the commune of Becquigny, in the department of Aisne, in the Hauts-de-France region. This rural village, first mentioned as the Latin Bekegnies in 1163, has known various spellings over the centuries, reflecting its historical evolution. In the 18th century, the map of Cassini shows Becquigny as a parish organized around a ru and ponds, with agricultural activities and windmills now gone.

The commune, classified as a rural with scattered habitat, is part of the attraction area of Bohain-en-Vermandois. Its economy and landscape are marked by a strong agricultural presence (75.4% of the land in 2018), with forests covering the rest of the territory. The church, although not dated precisely in the sources, fits into this historical and geographical context, typical of the small parishes of north-east France.

The neighbouring hamlet of Becquignette, quoted from 1411, as well as infrastructure such as windmills or La Fremiette farm (disappeared today), testify to an ancient community organization. These elements, combined with the mention of the church, suggest a central role of this place of worship in local life, although the available archives do not specify its architectural history or its transformations.
