Maurice d'Agaune - Holy martyr Patron of the church, represented in a painting.

Origin and history

Saint-Maurice Church, located in Marcellaz in Haute-Savoie, is a religious building in the neo-classical Sardinian style. It is dedicated to Saint Maurice d'Agaune, a Christian martyr, and is distinguished by its architecture in the form of a Latin cross, deeper than wide. This architectural style, called "sard" reflects the regional influences of the time.

The present church was built between 1851 and 1854, marking a period of architectural and religious development in the region. The interior paintings were completely redone in 1998, reflecting regular maintenance and a desire to preserve its artistic heritage. This work has helped restore the beauty and richness of interior decorations.

The building houses remarkable furniture, including a white marble altar, a painting depicting Maurice d'Agaune, as well as quality woodwork. These elements contribute to its sanctity and importance in the local heritage. The church also has a carillon, mentioned in local studies as a significant part of its history.

Saint-Maurice Church is part of the religious landscape of Haute-Savoie, an area marked by a strong Catholic tradition. It is cited in local historical works, such as the History of Savoyard Communes, which highlight its role in Marcellaz's community and spiritual life.
