Origin and history

The church of Saint-Pierre de Curtil-sous-Burnand, located in the department of Saône-et-Loire in Bourgogne-Franche-Comté, is a Catholic building registered with historical monuments since 23 February 1993. Its architecture is distinguished by a unique nave vaulted with an acute cradle, a transept with broken arches, and a flat-bed choir decorated with d Architectural details, such as human masks and foliage consoles, reflect a sober but elaborate style, typical of rural churches in this region.

The history of the church is partially documented through pastoral visitations. In 1675, a report mentions a "well vaulted" church with a painted choir representing the four evangelists. However, in 1746, a new visit reported the deterioration of the vault and cracks in the walls, revealing persistent structural problems. These archives provide an overview of the conservation challenges faced by rural religious buildings in the 17th and 18th centuries.

The church furniture includes notable elements, such as a contemporary altar created in 1994 by artist Michel Bouillot, originally intended for the church of Saint-Clément-sur-Guye. The ground also preserves historical tombstones, including those of Abbé Devillié (curé from 1730 to 1740), Guillaume de Drée (1638), local lord in armor, and the couple Guy du Boys (1510) and Claude de Chavannes. These funeral remains, studied in 1925 by Louis Hardigny, testify to the church's anchoring in local history.

Today, Saint Peter's church remains an active place of worship, attached to the diocese of Autun and the parish of Saint-Louis-entre-Grosne-et-Guye. Its protection in respect of historical monuments underlines its heritage importance, both for its architecture and for its continuing role in the religious and community life of Curtil-sub-Burnand.
