Origin and history

The church Saint-Pierre de René, located in the Sarthe department in Pays de la Loire, is a Romanesque building rebuilt in the 15th and 16th centuries. Its unique nave, originally built in a sober style, was enlarged in 1437 and then in 1535, with the addition of a three-sided apse, a transept, and side chapels. The bell tower, typical of the churches of the region, and the stained glass windows dated 1537 testify to this period of architectural transformation.

On June 12, 1762, a landmark event in its history was the baptism of the big bell, named Bonne Armand, in the presence of local notables. Among them were Bonne Françoise Dengelgen, widow of the Lord of René, as well as ecclesiastical representatives such as the parish priests of Nouans and René. This ritual, common in parishes, emphasized the social and religious role of the church in the eighteenth century.

The building was listed as a historic monument in 2002 for its facades and roofs, recognizing its heritage value. Its interior, characterized by a glazed nave, and its box — an outer covered space often used for parish gatherings — illustrate the communal and liturgical uses that have traversed the centuries. The church property today belongs to the commune of René.

Available sources, including the Merimée bases and collaborative contributions such as Wikipedia, confirm its anchoring in the religious and architectural landscape of Sarthois. Its precise address, 14 Place de l'Église, and its Insee code (72251) place it in the heart of the village, reflecting its historical importance for the locality.
