Origin and history
The Church of Saint Sebastian of La Chapelle-Vaupelteigne is a religious building built in the 13th century. It is located in the centre of the village, on the west side, and is a typical example of the medieval sacred architecture of the region. Its inscription in the title of historic monuments, by order of 9 December 1929, bears witness to its heritage value and its importance for the local heritage.
Burgundy, in medieval times, was a region marked by strong religious and agricultural activity. Churches, like La Chapelle-Vaupelteigne, played a central role in community life, serving as both a place of worship, a gathering and a symbol of village identity. Their construction often reflected local resources and know-how, while meeting the spiritual and social needs of the inhabitants.
The building is now owned by the municipality and remains a point of interest for visitors wishing to discover the history and religious architecture of the Yonne. Its inscription in the Mérimée base and its precise location at 14 Rue de la Vallée des Rosiers make it possible to better document and preserve this heritage.
