Origin and history
Saint Sulpice de La Pallu Church is a Catholic building located in the town of La Pallu, Mayenne, on the edge of the 244 departmental road. Its choir, the oldest part, bears witness to a medieval origin, although most of its present structure dates from the reconstructions of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. It is dedicated to Saint Sulpice, a local patron saint, and its Romanesque architecture is distinguished by a steeple at 33 meters high.
The history of the church is marked by the figure of the parish priest Laigneau, installed at the parish on 10 June 1780. The latter, having been sworn in to the Civil Constitution of the clergy in 1791, was forced to hide in Laval during the Terror. Arrested in 1796 and then released, he was again imprisoned in 1798 before being finally released in 1799. After these trials, he served in several communes, leaving a mark on local religious life.
The interior of the church reveals a variety of architectural elements: a window of the bedside in a broken arch, masked by the altar, windows in the middle of a hanger decorated with shingles and tympanos in the nave, as well as an 18th century wooden pulpit. Among the notable works, a statue of Saint Sulpice adorns the choir, while a 17th century stained glass window depicts a pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela, offering an overview of the village of La Pallu, the church, the presbytery and the old cemetery.
A statue of Saint Eloi, also dating from the 17th century, recalls the existence of a brotherhood dedicated to social assistance. The mission of this fraternity was to relieve the poor, to assist the sick, and to combat moral disorders such as drunkenness or rancour. These elements reflect the central role of the church in the community and spiritual life of La Pallu throughout the centuries.
