Origin and history

Saint Vincent Cathedral of Saint Malo, dedicated to St Vincent of Zaragoza, was built from the 12th century on the site of a monastery dependent on the Abbey of Marmoutiers. In 1145, it became the seat of the bishopric of Saint Malo under the impulse of Bishop Jean de la Gride, transforming the monastic church into a Romanesque cathedral with a single nave, transept and choir. In the 13th century, the choir was rebuilt in Gothic style by Bishop Geoffroy of Pontual, while the tower, begun in the 12th century, was raised in 1422. Chapels and collaterals were added in the 15th and 16th centuries, reflecting various architectural influences, including Anglo-Norman Gothic art.

In the 17th century, major changes were made: the transept was symmetrically enlarged, the soil of the elevated sanctuary, and the rosacea of the bedside destroyed in 1695 by Anglo-Holland cannons, replaced by three bays. The neoclassical facade, built between 1772 and 1773 by architect Robert Verron, masked the medieval masonries. In 1858, a Breton stone arrow from Caen, inspired by Quimper's, replaced the Dome of the eighteenth century, at the request of Napoleon III.

Gravely damaged during the 1944 bombings, the cathedral was restored between 1944 and 1972 under the direction of architects Raymond Cornon and Pierre Prunet. The arrow, rebuilt in a more refined style, was inaugurated in 1972. The stained glass windows, entirely remodeled after the war, illustrate the evolution of religious glass art, with major contributions from Max Ingrand and Jean Le Moal. The cathedral also houses famous tombs such as Jacques Cartier and René Duguay-Trouin, as well as three modern organs of the Koenig manufacture.

Classified as a historic monument since 1910, Saint Vincent Cathedral is a testament to the architectural and historical transformations of Saint Malo, mixing medieval heritage, war destruction and contemporary restorations. It remains an emblematic place of the Breton Tro Breiz pilgrimage, and a symbol of the city's resilience after the Second World War.

The bells, rebuilt in 2019, perpetuate centuries-old traditions, such as the curfew ringed every night since the 16th century by the Noguette bell. The liturgical furniture, renewed in 1991 by Arcabas, and the marble statues of Francesco Maria Schiaffino enrich its artistic heritage. Today, the cathedral combines religious, cultural and memorial functions, embodying the maritime and episcopal history of Saint Malo.
