Origin and history

The archaeological site of Bliesbruck, located in the Blies Valley in Moselle, is an exceptional testimony of the Gallo-Roman period. The excavations revealed a flourishing agglomeration, including monumental public baths, an artisanal district and traces of dwellings. These remains, partially classified as Historical Monuments in 1986, reveal a continuous occupation from the 1st to the 15th century, with a climax under the Roman Empire thanks to the road linking Brumath to Hermeskappel and the exploitation of local resources, including fishing in the Blies.

Bliesbruck's prosperity declined after the fourth century because of barbaric invasions, although the thermal baths continued to be occupied until the Middle Ages. The site, which is now part of the European Archaeological Park in Bliesbruck-Reinheim (opened in 1991), offers an immersive reconstruction of daily life, with animations in a rebuilt bakery and pottery. The excavation campaigns also revealed medieval burials, including those of alleged members of the De Brucken family, local lords.

The museum park, designed by architects Frédéric Jung and Gilbert Long, combines wood, steel and concrete to protect the remains while highlighting them. The thermal baths, covered by a laminated-paste structure, and the artisanal district form a unique educational path. The site is managed by the Moselle department and open to the public from March to October, illustrating the influence of this Gallo-Roman village on the margins of the major urban centres of Gaule belgique.

The region, then integrated into the Roman province of Gaule belgique, enjoyed a strategic position near the border with Germany. The Bliesbruck thermal baths, exceptional in size for a rural area, suggest an affluent population, possibly linked to the Roman trade or administration. Their gradual abandonment after the fifth century coincided with the political upheavals and migrations that marked the end of antiquity in East Gaul.

In the Middle Ages, the site was partially reinvested, as evidenced by the remains of a strong house built in the thermal baths in the 15th and 16th centuries. Recent excavations (2011–2013) exhumed medieval burials, including that of Abbé Schaultz, builder of the 18th century church, and a family vault that could belong to the Lords of Brucken. These discoveries highlight the historical continuity of the site, from the Roman world to the modern era.

The European Archaeological Park is now an active research site, with annual excavation campaigns. He works with German institutions, including the twin site of Reinheim, across the border. The animations proposed, such as the demonstrations of pottery or antique bakery, aim to make accessible the local history, while preserving a fragile heritage, classified and inscribed in the Historical Monuments since 1986 and 1995.
