Origin and history
The archaeological site of the Dolmen I de Montaubert is part of a group of five dolmens, also called dolmens de Peyrelevade or Peyrelebade, located in the commune of Salles-la-Source, in the department of Aveyron. These funeral monuments date from Neolithic, a period marked by the emergence of agriculture and complex social structures. Only Dolmen No. 1 has been officially listed as historic monuments since 1993, attesting to its heritage importance.
The dolmens of Montaubert illustrate the collective funeral practices of Neolithic, where these buildings served as burial places for local communities. Their placement in the landscape reflects a territorial and symbolic organization, often linked to roads or strategic points of relief. Although four of the five dolmens remain, their conservation status varies, and their precise location remains subject to approximations, as evidenced by available GPS coordinates.
The protection of Dolmen No 1 by decree of 9 February 1993 underlines the desire to preserve this fragile heritage. This monument, located on the plot AV 254, is representative of the megalithic constructions of the Occitanie region, now integrated in a modern administrative context (Insee code 12254 for Salles-la-Source).
