Origin and history

The archaeological site of Dolmen III of the Vézinies is located in Salles-la-Source, in the department of Aveyron, in the Occitan region. This dolmen belongs to a group of five similar monuments dated Neolithic. He still retains his four staves and bedside slab, although his blanket slabs have disappeared. This vestige bears witness to the funeral and architectural practices of local neolithic communities.

The dolmen was searched in 1941, revealing elements still poorly documented today. It has been listed as historic monuments since 13 August 1997 by ministerial decree. The AV 20 parcel, on which it is located, is protected for its archaeological interest. Its location, noted as "a priori satisfactory" (level 6/10), allows a continuous study of this prehistoric heritage.

The dolmens of the Vézinies illustrate the ancient human occupation of Aveyron, an area marked by a high density of megalithic sites. Their presence suggests a complex social organization, where these structures probably served as collective burials. Although the available sources (Wikipedia, Monumentum) remain limited, this dolmen offers an overview of the funeral traditions of Neolithic in the south of France.
