Origin and history
The archaeological site of Saint-Mont extends over the communes of Saint-Étienne-lès-Remiremont and Saint-Amé, in the Vosges department, in the Grand Est region. This site is marked by a continuous human occupation, mainly attested between late Antiquity and the Modern Epoch. The research revealed a variety of structures and artifacts, reflecting its local historical significance.
Between 1964 and 1991, several excavation campaigns were organized under the successive direction of Michel Rouillon and Charles Kraemer. These works have documented the evolution of the site throughout the centuries, revealing traces of habitats, artisanal or religious activities, and cultural exchanges peculiar to this border region of the Vosges.
The site was recognized for its heritage value and listed as historic monuments by order of 7 July 1995. This protection covers a specific area including plots on both municipalities, highlighting its scientific and historical interest. Today, the Saint-Mont remains a key place to understand the dynamics of occupation of Vosges territory over the long term.
The property of the site is shared between private actors and the commune of Saint-Amé, which can influence its accessibility and its enhancement. Although sources indicate an approximate location (estimated at 5/10), the site continues to attract the attention of archaeologists and regional history enthusiasts.
The remains discovered at the Saint-Mont illustrate the social and economic transformations of this area, from the early late installations of Antiquity to the more recent developments of the Modern Epoch. These discoveries offer valuable insights into lifestyles, beliefs and construction techniques in Lorraine through the ages.
Finally, the site is part of a wider network of protected monuments of the Vosges, contributing to the richness of the archaeological heritage of the Great East. His study provides a better understanding of the interactions between local communities and the external influences that have shaped this region over the centuries.
