Origin and history
The Lagrave Shelter is a prehistoric adorned cave located in Faycelles, Lot department in Occitanie region. It is owned by a private owner and is not accessible to the public. This site is distinguished by its figurative motifs, rare in parietal art, usually associated with furniture art.
The engravings, discovered in 1999, form a large frieze of 3 meters long and 90 cm wide, representing horses, a bull and a 23.5 cm female silhouette. These works offer a valuable testimony to the graphic expression of the men of Upper Paleolithic or Epipaleolithic, periods marked by major cultural changes.
The cave was listed as historic monuments on June 6, 2020 for its exceptional scientific interest. Protected elements include all architectural structures, their archaeological context, and the underground network bounded by a precise polygon. Despite its importance, the site remains closed to visit, preserving its integrity.
Lagrave's shelter is part of a prehistoric landscape rich in Occitanie, alongside other sites such as the Pestillac Cave. These discoveries illustrate the diversity of artistic and ritual practices of hunter-gatherer societies at the end of Prehistory, in a region marked by changing environments.
